Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council Liaison Officer Paul Jarvis attended the August 23 training session of Project STIR (Steps Toward Independence and Responsibility), and People First council to teach participants how a bill becomes a law.

Participants of Project STIR learn, through interaction with one another and through visual aids, how they can educate local legislators on various issues regarding individuals with developmental disabilities. These learning efforts encourage participants to be more involved in statewide decisions and encourage self-advocacy.

Gaining independence and moving toward more responsibility is the goal of Project STIR and People First. Both are part of a training project to empower people with developmental disabilities, their families, friends and other supporters, by providing the practical, “how to” tools necessary for anyone who is interested in being a self-advocate and leader in making choices and decisions about how they live their lives.

Jarvis, who travels the state providing education and training to various developmental disabilities program said, “When can you have an impact? When you talk to the people who have the power to do something about your issue of concern and give them the information they need.”

The local Project STIR chapter and People First Council is supported by the Scioto County Board of Developmental Disabilities. The programs support the development and strengthening of local self-advocacy groups through leadership training. For more information on this program, contact Stephanie Barber-Maynard at 353-1505.
