The Ohio State Highway Patrol announced that an OVI (operating a vehicle under the influence) sobriety checkpoint will be conducted from 10 p.m. tonight to 1 a.m. Saturday on U.S. 52 westbound at the exit ramp to SR 73 in Scioto County.

The Patrol will work in conjunction with the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office during the checkpoint. Portsmouth Post Commander Lieutenant Karla Taulbee, said the OVI checkpoint, funded by fines from impaired drivers and other federal funding, is expected to deter and intercept impaired drivers.

The checkpoint is in conjunction with nearby saturation patrols, which aggressively combat alcohol-related injury and fatal crashes.

“If you plan to consume alcohol, designate a driver or make other travel arrangements before you drink,” Taulbee said. “Don’t let another life be lost for the senseless and selfish act of getting behind the wheel impaired.”
