Alert actions by a Pike County deputy have resulted in two persons being incarcerated in the Scioto County Jail.

Adam Michael McCune, 28, of Waverly and Mark Lewis Stiff, 32, of Piketon were both charged with attempted theft of a motor vehicle, a fourth degree felony, and possession of criminal tools, felony-5.

Pike County Sheriff Richard N. Henderson said around 3:43 a.m. on July 31, while deputy James Burchett was patrolling the area of Jasper he observed two men standing near a parked vehicle at the Ohio 104 park and ride. Henderson said Burchett immediately suspected criminal activity as one of them was wearing socks on his hands and holding a hammer and screwdrivers and appeared to be tampering with the vehicle.

As a result of an investigation into the matter, it was determined McCune and Stiff were apparently attempting to steal a vehicle that had been parked at the park and ride.

Bond had been set at $30,000, and the case will be presented to an upcoming term of a Pike County grand jury.
