Another season for The Counseling Center’s Outreach Summer Camp Program is coming to an end. As is the custom, there will be a closing ceremony Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012, at the 14th Street Community Center in which the camp participants, their parents or guardians, camp staff, and members of the local community come together for a wrap up of the summer camp’s events and activitites.
It has been an extremely busy time for the staff of the summer camp, which had averaged 75 to 80 kids each day since the program began this summer on June 4. The program provides an array of events for the youth to participate in.
“I would say that we had a successful season, but yet productive season. The kids seemed to really enjoy themselves, and got a chance to experience some new things. We are pleased with the 2012 season,” Clarence Parker, Counseling Center Outreach Coordinator said.
Cirque D’Art was a new venture for the kids ages 9-12 of the Summer Camp. Cirque D’Art is circus troop of more than 200 students that is sponsored by the Southern Ohio Museum. Cirque D’Art seeks to mentor individuals intellectuallly, emotionally, and physically, as well as enhance self-esteem, and self-confidence.
The members from the SOLACE group came to the 14th Street Street and talked with the group about the dangers of drugs.
The Summer Outreach Camp continued regular activities such as visiting the Chillicothe Pool, visiting the Portsmouth Public Library, McKinley Pool and doing outside sports games.
“Our Closing Ceremony is a time that we basically give a wrap up for the parents, and those that we invite of the events that the kids were a part of. We allow the groups to share what they’ve done. Its a time to reflect upon the Summer Camp’s events,” Parker said.
After 22 years, the Summer Outreach Camp is still progressing, and will begin again in summer 2013.
