Following-up on last year’s Good Neighbor awards for superb business and residential landscaping, delayed this year due to heat and storms, First Ward Councilman Kevin Johnson recently awarded the Reynolds & Company CPA firm, at 839 Gallia St., the first — and hopefully not last — “Downtown Portsmouth Beautification Champion” award.

“I had heard through the grapevine that Reynolds & Company had contracted with a local individual to prune trees, pull weeds and keep the sidewalks clean, not only in front of their business but all of the south end of Gallia Street, the east side of Gay Street between Gallia and Sixth streets and the south end of Sixth Street; nearly a third of an entire city block,” Johnson said.

“Given the many complaints I and others receive every summer concerning weeds in the downtown, and the impression that unkempt trees, trash and unsightliness leaves on residents and visitors alike, I decided any company willing to invest in beautifying our downtown truly deserves to be recognized. I am most hopeful that other businesses might be recognized in the future as others see what return a minimal investment makes to the beautification of downtown Portsmouth.”

The certificate reads “Portsmouth Beautification Champion.”

A call made to management at Reynolds & Company went unreturned Tuesday.
