Five Portsmouth area musical performers recently returned from Beijing, China, where they performed at the invitation of the Chinese government in an international concert featuring Chinese and American artists.

Performing were Dr. Stanley Workman, Jr., featured tenor soloist; John Huston, featured baritone soloist; Shirley Crothers-Marley, featured soprano soloist; Dr. Michael Barnhart, featured saxophone player and composer; and Maria Minter Ginn, featured soprano soloist. One of Barnhart’s recent compositions was showcased by the Beijing Opera Orchestra.

James Huang, former Shawnee State University music student, adjunct instructor and composer, organized and produced the concert, which was at the request of the Chinese government. His compositions and arrangements were performed by the Beijing Opera Orchestra, as well as several of the performing artists, including Workman, who sang one of Huang’s compositions in the Chinese language.

Crothers-Marley said all of the performing artists were greeted warmly by the large crowd of concert attendees.
