The American Cancer Societies Relay For Life of Scioto County will be holding a kick-off event on January 6th to mark the beginning efforts of the 2011 relay.
"This is an annual kick-off to the new year. We will be gathering at the SOMC Cancer Center on January 6th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.," Rosie Williams, Scioto county event chair said. "This is a time for established teams to come and get started on the new fundraising year, as well as any new teams or any interested residents of Scioto County to come a join us to see what the relay is all about."
During the event stations will be set up where interested participants can learn more about the relay. Stations include, what happens at the relay to honor cancer survivors, details about the luminary ceremony along with entertainment and many others.
"There will be a station for teams to pick up fundraising information and paperwork for 2011," Williams said. "There will be an area for entreatment ideas and suggestions. The relay is an 18 hour event so we are always looking for suggestions for entertainment."
Williams said the relay is important because, "the relay is the community coming together to fight against cancer. Every one of our lives is touched by cancer in some way or fashion. The relay raises money for Scioto County to fight cancer."
According to the American Cancer Society, Ohio Cancer Facts & Figures 2010, in 2010, an estimated 64,450 Ohioans will be diagnosed with invasive cancer and 24,980 Ohioans will die from the disease. The five-year relative survival probability for all cancers diagnosed nationally during 1999-2005 is 68%, up from 50% in 1975-1977. Survival rates are highest when cancer is detected early.
"Our goal for 2010 was to raise $65,000 and we raised $67,000. Our goal for 2011 is $72,000," Williams said.
She said there are about 30 teams signed up thus far for the 2011 relay. "All of our efforts go together to help raise that money. So, it really is a community effort," Williams said.
There are no limits to the number of teams that can participate. Williams said there also no limits to the amount of money teams raise.
"In order for us to get a handle on cancer and for future generations to prevent cancer people should participate in events like these. I think this is the only way it's going to happen," Williams said.
The American Cancer Society does not focus its efforts on preventing one type of cancer its focus is on cancer its self.
This years Scioto County Relay For Life will take place June 24th at the Scioto County Fair Grounds.
